Civil Analysis and Photography competition is an annual international competition held by Petra Christian University, which is a private university located in Surabaya, Indonesia. It is one of the best private universities in Indonesia, and its Civil Engineering department is also its leading department.

This year, the theme of the competition is “The Secret Behind Landmark’s Structure”. The competition will be held in 2 stages. In the first stage, participants are required to submit a photo artwork of a selected building/ structure, along with its analysis. The judges will assess the submitted artworks and choose the best 20 artworks to proceed to the next stage. In the second stage, the participants are required to submit infographic description with more detailed analysis of their artwork and an explanation video to provide better understanding for the judges to assess. From the second stage, the winners are going to be selected based on the infographic and video submission.

This year, I am the only participant that studies outside of Indonesia. Being in Taiwan, I think that it would made the most sense if I select Taipei 101 as my structure. Not only it is a special characteristic of Taiwan, the place I studied in, but it also is a building with a very interesting structure. In the first stage, I took the picture of Taipei 101 (the image is attached below), and also analyze its structural uniqueness. I put emphasis on the fact that Taipei 101 is a building located in a place with strong winds and frequent earthquakes, but yet it could still strand as one of the world’s tallest building. I also included a secondary supporting image.

For the second stage, I created an infographic poster with the theme “Taipei 101 – The Pride of Taiwan”. Here, I mention the unique features that it has, and also the reason it could represent Taiwan to the world, while standing against the worst possible nature conditions.

For the video, I made a 1.5-minute-long video discussing mainly on the structural features of the Taipei 101. I discussed about its mechanical floors, which is equipped with both belt and outrigger trusses, its Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), which is the world’s largest, and also its foundation, which consisted of 380 piles drilled into the ground.

In the end, I managed to become the 1st winner of this competition, and also the first student that is not studying in Indonesian universities to win this competition, because every year it is won by students studying in Indonesian universities. I am glad to be able to represent National Taiwan University in this competition, while displaying a building that is a symbolic landmark in Taiwan.
